Augustfame-Agave Potatorum Ouhi Raijin Shiro Nakafu” refers to a specific variegated Agave potatorum cultivar sold by the nursery Augustfame, with “Ouhi Raijin Shiro Nakafu” describing its characteristics. This is a dwarf agave known for its gray-green leaves with a white or cream center, prominent spines, and compact, rose-bud-like shape. The term “Ouhi Raijin Shiro Nakafu” translates to “King’s Queen Thor” with “Shiro Nakafu” meaning “white center variegation”.
Characteristics
Type: Variegated succulent from the Agave potatorum species.
Name translation: “Ouhi Raijin” (王妃雷神) means “King’s Queen Thor,” and “Shiro Nakafu” (白中斑) means “white center variegation”.
Appearance: A compact, dwarf agave with a rose-bud-like shape.
Leaves: Gray-green with a broad cream or white band in the center, contrasting with the dark spines.
Spines: Prominent, hooked spines along the leaf margins and a sharp terminal spine.
Sunlight: The plant thrives in bright, direct sunlight for at least six hours a day to maintain its compact rosette and vibrant variegation.
Soil: Use a very well-draining soil mix designed for cacti and succulents, which prevents root rot. Amendments like pumice, lava rock, or coarse sand can be added to improve gritty texture and drainage.
Watering: Water sparingly and practice the “soak and dry” method. Wait until the soil is completely dry before watering thoroughly. Reduce watering significantly during the cooler, dormant winter months.
