Cojoba arborea, also known as the royal mahogany or wild tamarind, is a fast-growing tropical tree that can reach up to 40 meters tall. It is characterized by its wide, hemispherical crown of finely-textured, feathery leaves and produces white flowers followed by reddish-purple seed pods that reveal shiny black seeds. Valued for its shade and heavy wood, it is native to Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean.
To care for a Cojoba arborea, provide bright light, well-draining soil, and infrequent but thorough watering, allowing the soil to dry between waterings to prevent root rot. Fertilize during the growing season and prune to shape the plant and encourage lateral growth.
Light
Provide bright, direct sunlight. Indoors, place the plant near a south-facing window but keep it out of direct, hot summer sun.
Insufficient light can cause the plant to stretch, so placement less than 3 feet from a window is ideal.
Watering and soil
Water infrequently but thoroughly, allowing the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings.
Use a well-draining, loamy soil mix to prevent waterlogging and root rot.
The plant is drought-tolerant but dislikes excessive moisture.
