Decapsulated Artemia (often referred to as decaps or decapsulated brine shrimp eggs) are Artemia cysts that have had their hard, indigestible outer shell (chorion) chemically dissolved using bleach. This exposes the bare embryo, leaving it ready to be hatched into live nauplii or fed directly to fish fry.
Why Aquarists Use Decaps
No Shell Contamination: Fry can experience blockages or mortality if they ingest the indigestible outer shells of unhatched eggs. Decapsulated cysts prevent this entirely.
Higher Nutritional Value: Because the shrimp embryo uses its stored energy to break out of its shell, decapsulated cysts retain higher caloric, lipid, and amino acid values.
Cleaner Water: Hatching without shells leaves no floating debris, which improves overall tank water quality and prevents fungal/bacterial growth.
