Durian saplings are young durian trees that can be grown from seed or through vegetative propagation techniques like grafting. They are characterized by a central trunk, rough branches, and leaves that are shiny green on top with a silvery or golden underside.

To care for durian saplings, provide filtered sunlight, water them consistently but not excessively, and plant them in well-draining, slightly acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Protect young trees from strong winds and pests like rose beetles with a cage and shade cloth, and prune carefully to encourage good structure, especially removing low-hanging branches.

Planting and soil

Sunlight: Young durian trees prefer filtered sunlight or shade until they are about 4-5 feet tall.

Soil: Use well-draining, nutrient-rich soil with a slightly acidic pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Mix in compost or well-rotted manure to provide nutrients.

Planting: Plant the sapling at its original depth from the nursery container and avoid waterlogged conditions.

Watering and fertilizing

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. Water more frequently during dry periods. A drip irrigation system can be effective.

Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer around the base of the seedling, following the recommended dosage and frequency to provide essential nutrients.

Mulching: After fertilizing, apply mulch to help retain moisture and prevent weeds.

Protection and pruning

Protection: Young trees are sensitive to wind and pests. Use a wire cage with shade cloth to protect them from pests like rose beetles and strong winds.

Pruning: Remove any branches that are too low, and choose the strongest leader for the main trunk. For a structured plant, prune branches within about 40cm (1.5 feet) of the ground. For a larger tree, prune those within 80cm (2.5 feet).
