Portulacaria afra ‘Variegata’ (Variegated Elephant Bush) is a slow-growing, succulent shrub characterized by small, fleshy, opposite leaves that are light green with creamy-white margins, set on striking, dark reddish-brown, brittle stems. A popular, easy-care houseplant or bonsai, it features a trailing or sprawling habit, growing 1–3 feet tall, and produces tiny, pale pink flowers in summer.
Light: Prefers full sun to bright, indirect light. Intense sun can cause the cream edges to scorch, while too little light will make the plant lose its variegation.
Water: Extremely drought-tolerant. Needs sparse watering; allow the soil to dry completely between waterings to prevent root rot.
Soil: Requires well-drained soil, such as a succulent or cactus potting mix.
