Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is a tender, highly aromatic herb belonging to the mint family (Lamiaceae). Sunlight: Place your basil in the sunniest spot available, ideally where it receives at least 6 hours of direct sun.

Soil: Use a rich, organic, and well-draining potting mix. If planting in a pot, ensure it has drainage holes so the plant doesn’t sit in excess water, which causes root rot.

Pruning: When the plant reaches about 15 cm (6 inches) tall, pinch off the top central stem just above a pair of leaves. This redistributes growth to lower branches, resulting in a bushy, full plant rather than a tall, spindly one.
