The Barbados cherry (also known as acerola, West Indian cherry, or Malpighia emarginata) is a tropical, evergreen shrub or small tree native to the Americas. Famous for its exceptionally high vitamin C content, it produces bright red, tart fruits and small, delicate pink flowers.
Sunlight: Provide at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. While they can tolerate partial shade, maximum sun exposure promotes the most blossoms and heavy fruit yields.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Water deeply during dry spells and hot summers, as moisture stress can severely reduce fruit production.
Soil & Fertilization: Plant in well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5 – 6.5). Feed your plant every 1-2 months during the active growing season using a balanced, organic fruit-tree fertilizer.
Pruning: Prune lightly after the main harvest to shape the canopy, remove dead or crossing branches, and encourage new growth where future flowers and fruit will form.
